Deakin Distinguished Professor Kon Mouzakis, Co-Director of Deakin Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative, has been conferred an Honorary Professorship by the University of West Attica in Greece.
The distinction was conferred at a ceremony hosted by Australia’s Ambassador to Greece, Alison Duncan, at the Australian Embassy in Athens, where Professor Mouzakis was formally invested with the university’s academic gown before colleagues, family and friends in Greece.
Among those in attendance were the Rector of the University of West Attica, Professor Panagiotis E. Kaldis; the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Konstantinos Stergiou; and the Head of the Department of Industrial Design and Production and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Georgios Priniotakis, who attested to Professor Mouzakis’s achievements and contributions to science.
Kon is a Professor of Software and Technology Innovation and Co-Director of Deakin’s Applied AI Initiative, where his research spans human-computer interactions, data science and machine learning. His work includes the world-first Trauma Reception and Resuscitation decision support system, developed with the Alfred Hospital Trauma Centre in Melbourne and now implemented in major trauma centres in India, China, Saudi Arabia, with a new implementation in progress in Ireland.
Kon arrived in Australia at the age of two with his Greek migrant parents and has maintained strong links with Greece throughout his career. His appointment at the University of West Attica will further support closer research and academic collaboration between the two countries.
