Deakin University’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative and Red Velvet AI have joined forces to launch a pioneering new initiative: The AI Bakery.

This world-first co-lab is designed to simultaneously:

  • Accelerate AI adoption within universities
  • Enable applied advances in AI research
  • Support the commercialisation of AI innovations

A living lab for applied AI

The AI Bakery provides a unique environment where researchers and engineers can study and validate AI in real-world contexts.

“The potential of AI is realised through validation in context – one size does not fit all,” says Associate Professor Scott Barnett, Deputy Head Translational Research and Commercialisation at Deakin Applied AI.

A launchpad for innovation and commercial impact

The co-lab will run for two years, enabling Red Velvet AI to test and refine its AI solutions before scaling across the education sector and beyond. Through access to Deakin Applied AI’s expert researchers, engineers, and post-graduate student talent, Red Velvet gains a strategic advantage in accelerating product development and market readiness.

Empowering the next generation of AI engineers

The launch of the AI Bakery offers a rare opportunity: direct access to real-world AI systems that inform the design of next-generation tools, methods, and educational technologies. A key focus will be on AI EdTech, developing solutions that reduce administrative burden and enhance the student experience.

A shared vision for AI leadership

The AI Bakery reflects Deakin’s commitment to leading in applied AI and research commercialisation, and Red Velvet AI’s mission to deliver scalable, human-centred AI solutions.
