For a second year running, staff from the Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute (A2I2) proudly represented Deakin University at the 2022 ‘Women in AI Awards’ ceremony. The event was held on Thursday March 31st at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The prestigious event, organised by Women in AI (WAI), honours the contributions and achievements of women in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). WAI is a global not-for-profit initiative spanning over 100 countries. Through a variety of educational programs WAI educates young women on gender-inclusive AI and aims to increase female representation and participation in the field.

The event was attended by Deakin University Deputy Vice Chancellor Research, Alfred Deakin Professor Julie Owens. A2I2 Co-Director Professor Kon Mouzakis was also in attendance.

“Women bring unique perspectives to the AI industry, and this is crucial to navigating a changing work environment as we emerge from the pandemic”, said Professor Mouzakis.

Deakin University is a lead partner of the WAI Awards initiative, sponsoring the AI in Manufacturing Award. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Alfred Deakin Professor Julie Owens, a strong supporter of WAI, attended the ceremony and awarded the AI in innovation award.

Professor Mouzakis reaffirmed A2I2’s commitment to supporting women in the AI industry.

“We need more women to enter this growing industry – numerous opportunities exist here at A2I2 in research, industry work and more.”
